This is a 1st class reliquary St. Padre Pio Ex. Sanguine Glove from the estate of a family member of a Jesuit priest in Staten Island, New York.
Padre Pio was born in Peitrelcina, Italy on May 25, 1887. He became a Franciscan Monk and served at the monastery in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. He received the Stigmata of Christ on September 20, 1918. This occurred just as the Spanish Flu epidemic began and before the end of the Great War on November 11, 1918.
When word of Padre Pio's Stigmata began to spread, the faithful started traveling to San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy. At first, they came from all over Italy. But as word began to spread the news reached the Vatican. The Curia became concerned that Pio could be a charlatan and asked Pope Benedict XV to censor Pio. To settle the matter, the Pope ordered a medical examination of Padre Pio's stigmata.
Dr. Amico Bignami was chosen by the local Curate because it was discovered the doctor was not a believer in any theology. Therefore, he was considered to be unbiased and truthful.
Bignami wrapped Pio’s wounds with heavy gauze. Every day for eight days he inspected Pio’s hands to be sure the dressings had not been disturbed. He removed them on the eighth day.
The doctor found the edges to be clean and the wound itself free of any infection. These findings were of particular interest to him. In his report to the Pope, Bignami stated that while the skin showed a wound with bleeding, the wound itself was not self-inflicted. This was proven, he said, due to the fact that a self-inflicted wound would have torn edges and be infected as the body tried to heal it. Satisfied with the findings, P
ope Benedict ordered the bandages sent to the Vatican and stored in the Archives there. When Padre Pio was canonized on June 16, 2002, portions of  the gloves he wore to cover his Stigmata and his bandages from Dr. Bignami's examination were taken to make relics. We were told this is from those gloves.
Pio's feast day is September 23. He was buried at the monastery on September 26, 1968. His incorrupt body is on display in a glass tomb in San Giovanni Rotondo. The shrine is open every day of the year.
