St. Jose Sanchez del Rio was a Cristeros and part of the movement to preserve the Catholic faith in Mexico at a time when the Mexican government wanted to stamp it out. As a young boy of 14, Jose Sanchez refused to renounce his belief in the Holy Trinity and in Jesus Christ as the only son of God. Instead, he told anyone who would listen that he knew in his heart that Jesus was the true Son of God. He spent countless days spreading the Gospel of Jesus. But the recently elected government, which the people believed to be corrupt, passed a law making Catholicism and all worship of God, Jesus, and the Holy Trinity, illegal.
This was because the Church was an influential part of every day life in Mexico, which the newly formed secular government viewed as a threat to their power. They began forcing the closing of many Catholic Churches throughout Mexico. In protest, the Catholic faithful formed the Cristeros, or Christ movement, to stop the government from stamping out their faith, and to also continue to promote the faith especially among the young.
The government began singling out followers of the Cristeros movement for punishment and censorship. They especially wanted to silence young Jose Sanchez del Rio because many people, old and young alike, had started to view him as a true and pure voice among the people. They started following him all over Mexico as he went from place to place reassuring the faithful and all who would listen that God still loved the people and would help them to over come the government's challenges to their faith.
Young Jose Sanchez developed such a huge following that the government sought to silence him. They arrested him many times and put him in jail for days at a time with no food or water. They threatened his life unless he renounced his belief in Jesus and declared it to the people. Yet no matter the punishment, young Jose would not renounce his faith. Instead, he declared loudly that Jesus was the Son of the True God and that all who followed Jesus would be saved.
To show the people what would happen if they did not stop the Cristeros movement, they forced young Jose to walk across broken glass in the street in his bare feet. Jose kept moving, one step at a time, his feet cut and bleeding, yet instead of crying out, he called out to those watching to keep faith in Jesus and never give stop believing. The government leaders left Jose in his jail cell to bleed from the wounds until he passed away.
Such was the outrage at what had been done to Jose, a mere 14 year-old boy, that the government was forced out and freedom of religion and the Catholic faith were restored in Mexico. Jose was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI and canonized by Pope Francis. He is known for his rapid intercession in prayers said to him regardless of need or want. He is popular with all age groups especially those who feel oppressed and down on their luck.
