This medal is one of several from the estate collection of Mexico Bishop Pascual Diaz. The Most Reverend Pascual Díaz y Barreto, SJ (June 22, 1876 -- May 19, 1936) was a Mexican prelate of the Roman Catholic Church, who served as Archbishop of Mexico City from June 22, 1929, until his death in 1936.
Here on consignment for auction from one of the convents we work with is a rare antique medal. This medal is 1.5 inches long and weighs 18 grams of brass.
Augustine of Hippo, (13 November 354 -- 28 August 430), also known as Saint Augustine, was a theologian, philosopher, and the bishop of Hippo Regius in Numidia, Roman North Africa. His writings influenced the development of Western philosophy and Western Christianity, and he is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the Latin Church in the Patristic Period. His many important works include The City of God, On Christian Doctrine, and Confessions.
John of Facundo, O.E.S.A. (24 June 1419 -- 11 June 1479) was one of the Hermits of Saint Augustine. His devotion to the Blessed Sacrament was so great that he spent every night, from the hour of Matins at midnight, to the hour of Mass in the morning, in adoration of Our Lord in the Blessed Eucharist. He was often privileged in the saying of Mass to see Our Lord visibly in the Blessed Eucharist. Saint John of Saint Facundo is the patron saint of Salamanca in Spain. He died when he was sixty years old.
This medals dating can be confirmed on pages 2 & 3 of the book AN INTRODUCTION TO RELIGIOUS MEDALS, by Bob Forrest, and published by NUMISMATICA INTERNATIONAL in 2004. In addition, this book has chapters (outlined in the table of contents), describing each of the categories of medals, their possible place of pilgrimage (acquisition), and origin of the mint where they were made. We recommend that anyone serious about collecting medals from this period acquire a copy of this book.
